Cone Beam (3D Imaging)

Dentists sometimes need to see deeper inside the soft tissues and bones of a patient to diagnose and treat problems. Regular x-rays may not provide the needed information.

Our office in Berrien Springs, Michigan, has the newest CBCT (cone beam computed tomography) technology available to produce 3D images of the teeth, bones, soft tissues, and nerves. Other structures, such as lymph nodes, muscles, and the nasal cavity can be seen in the images. A single CBCT scan can provide much more information than several regular x-rays and with lower radiation exposure than doing a full CT scan on the body.

CBCT is special in that it uses a cone-shaped beam as it is moved around the patient’s head. This beam delivers high-resolution views to the computer which are then fashioned into a 3D image.

The CBCT machines are much smaller and less expensive than regular radiology machines, making them more practical for outpatient offices. Having these scans available in the office keeps the patient from having to go to a hospital for imaging and receiving faster diagnosis and treatment.
