Gum Treatments (Periodontal Treatment)

Periodontal disease is a disease found around (perio) the teeth (dontal). It is commonly referred to as gum disease. This is a disease within the bones and soft tissues of the mouth and occurs in stages.

The first stage of gum disease is gingivitis, which is the mildest form, and causes inflammation of the gums around the teeth.

The second stage is periodontitis, which is more severe, and the inflammation is spread throughout the soft tissues and the bones. The most severe form of periodontitis will lead to tooth loss.

Patients with diabetes, heart disease, respiratory disease, and a history of strokes are more likely to have gum disease.

Plaque is the enemy of the mouth, from cavities to periodontitis. When plaque is present on the teeth, bacteria grow. When the body senses bacteria, self-defense begins. Antibodies are sent to invade the soft tissues of the mouth to fight the bacteria. A prolonged fight causes pockets to form in the soft tissues. These pockets add more room and the ability for bacteria to grow. More antibodies are then sent to fight the bigger growth of bacteria, and a vicious circle starts. More pockets form.

Periodontal treatment is available and also begins in stages. Prevention is simply the removal of the plaque regularly with brushing, flossing, and twice-yearly cleanings.

When pockets have formed, a special cleaning process is performed, called scaling and planing. The pockets are carefully cleaned out and flushed with antiseptic. Lasers are also in both stages of periodontal care, from deep cleaning to surgical care of the gums. In more severe cases, gum flap surgery may be required to help the soft tissues heal.
