Implants
When patients lose a tooth to injury or infection, replacing the tooth is always the best option for the purposes of speech and chewing. Since overall health and bone health of the jaw are affected by missing teeth, the healthiest choice is to replace the entire tooth including the root.
When a tooth root is lost, the chewing vibrations are not transmitted to the entire jawbone anymore. The loss of this stimulation causes bone loss (up to 25% in the first year alone). Significant bone loss can cause the jaw and cheek to sag. This is the sunken-in appearance seen in adults with many teeth missing.
The single most effective tooth replacement method is a dental implant. The implant acts as root and tooth together. A titanium screw is placed in the jaw with an “abutment” piece to allow the attachment of a crown. Titanium is the chosen material for the screw for its ability to integrate with bone more easily, creating a stable foundation for the crown.
A temporary crown is placed on the screw for 2 to 6 months while the bone is healing. Once healed, a permanent crown is then cemented in place with a stronger adhesive. The combination of components allows for a sturdy tooth for a lifetime if cared for properly.
Proper care for an implant is the same as with natural teeth. A good oral routine with daily brushing and flossing as well as regular six-month cleanings.
