Laughing Gas

Dental anxiety is a real condition. Some patients fear dentists to the extent that they will avoid going to the dentist for any reason, even simple cleanings. If this is you or someone in your family, please call University Family Dental Studio in Berrien Springs, Michigan, for an appointment. The specialists here can make your visit comfortable and less frightening.

Nitrous oxide is commonly referred to as laughing gas. Laughing gas is used as a mild sedative in the dental office setting. It is safe to use on adults or children and is the preferred method of sedation when children are extremely anxious. The gas begins to work quickly and wears off in a very short time, leaving the patient fully awake and able to function immediately after the dental work.

Importantly, nitrous oxide does not place the patient to sleep, leaving them able to respond to questions and directions. The patient is aware of everything going on but is in a very relaxed state.

The gas is easily administered through a small mask placed over the nose. The patient breathes normally through the nose, and a sense of calm will occur. Patients may feel slightly lightheaded or have tingling in the arms and legs. Some patients have reported a heaviness in the arms and legs instead, but nothing painful.

Let us help you receive good dental care in a relaxed environment.
