Onlays

Tooth decay (cavities) can damage more than just the enamel on a tooth. Left untreated, a cavity will grow larger and possibly allow infection to set in. Removing the decay as soon as possible is the best way to prevent the cavity from advancing. The removal process is virtually painless and can be done in one day. The patient can return to a normal schedule immediately afterward.

When restoring a tooth to its original size and shape, several options are available at University Family Dental Studio. Minor cavities can be restored with a simple filling. Larger cavities require larger amounts of filling material for good restoration to be accomplished.

Porcelain or special dental composite is used for the larger procedure, called an onlay. An onlay covers more of the tooth, including inside and around. The bonding of the onlay to the tooth is stronger than when placing a filling and may actually increase the strength of the tooth after the repair. Onlays can replace one or more cusps (the pointed areas).
