Oral Cancer Screening

From routine cleanings to oral cancer screenings, early detection of any type of problem is key. As with any type of cancer, oral cancer has the best chance of cure when found early. Oral cancer screenings can locate precancerous issues or other signs of cancer in the mouth.

An oral cancer screening can be accomplished in 5 minutes or less. A visual exam is performed inside the mouth as well as palpating the areas inside and outside the mouth and under the tongue and chin. The dentist will be looking for suspicious lumps or spots on or under the tissues. A blue dye may be used to see abnormal areas.

Every patient receives a normal screening for obvious signs of cancer during their six-month cleaning appointment. If a patient is at higher risk for oral cancer, a more in-depth examination may be needed. These patients may:

• Have been diagnosed with oral cancer previously

• Spend a lot of time in the sun or on a tanning bed

• Drink large amounts of alcohol regularly

• Use smoking or chewing tobacco
