Root Canals

Damage to a tooth sometimes extends beyond what a person can see. Decay and infection can tunnel deep into the tooth. If the damage has not affected the root of the tooth, the dentist may recommend a procedure called a root canal. A root canal saves the natural tooth within the jawbone. Preserving the natural root is the healthiest option for a patient’s overall health as well as the appearance of their smile.

A root canal is a special procedure where the root is accessed and cleaned out to remove any underlying infection or damage. The pulp inside the root is no longer needed in an adult tooth. The main purpose of the pulp is to provide nutrients to the adult tooth during the growth period, so removing it will not affect the structure of the tooth. After the pulp removal, the remaining tooth is prepared to receive a temporary crown. A permanent crown is ordered and placed with a stronger cement when it arrives.

Keeping the original root in the jaw preserves the density of the bone. Chewing sends vibrations through the root to the bone, maintaining bone volume.
